According to Snow & Anderson (1987), Identity work encompasses a wide range of actions that, both individually and collectively, represent who we are and what we stand for in respect to or in comparison to others. As a result, identity work encompasses a wide variety of activities that people participate in order to build, convey, and maintain personal identities that are consistent with and supportive of their self-concept. These are accomplished by the acquisition/arrangement of physical settings/props, physical attractiveness, esthetic face work, selected affiliation with other persons or even groupings, and verbal/assertion of personal identities, all of which are referred to as identity talk.
